Vincent knows the painting well; some of his own paintings are less familiar. Throughout his adult life, the Frick Collection in New York, where it resides, has been a common destination. There were times he traveled the three hours each way just to see the painting and nothing else, had dinner nearby and drove home through the night, considering all it had revealed, knowing more about what he had to do the next morning in the studio. Every painting question he had ever brought to it had been resolved in its presence or in the contemplation during late hours in the car. Always, the oracle painting had been his guide - not to copy or even emulate but to not give up.
