excerpt from novel:

Journal entry from Rome
...Unlike Miller, I can no longer find a way to laugh my guts out at the rising tide of calamities and false heroes, the fools at the helm. I'm unable to laugh or sing, even for my own deliverance. I have never know a loneliness like this, for the hope of love, for the gravity of myself, I have lost my voice entirely but, maybe, not my nerve. What I am, what I have become in this bewilderment of silence is an aura without the man. Seared around the edges, I am yet incandescent from an unknown source. I am in Rome. I am the color of champagne and waiting for a miracle. I have returned this time seeking consultation with the heraldic painter of darkness and light.
