Its significance could not have been more timely. He'd known, boarding the train in Rome two weeks earlier, that this painting would be at the heart of his pilgrimage.
In a literal sense, his story and the painting's biblical narrative hardly relate but at the core, in the image of a man being brought back from the dead, Vincent could at least imagine coming back to life, rising out of the sickness of his heart and letting the pain sink into the black of the past, symbolized by the earth of the painting, its rough-surfaced, gigantic darkness.
