excerpt from novel:

In the dream, Cole is five years old, curled up next to Vincent as they sleep peacefully. French doors are open. The sea is below. On the horizon, lightning flickers.
When Vincent wakes, he continues to feel his son's small hand on his wrist for a full minute, gradually fading. He turns to look around the room. It's like waking into a large drawing of a room, graphite in color, filled with moonlight, things having only half regained their shapes. The sound of the sea is like a large breathing creature. Briefly he wonders if it had actually been himself as a child with his father, but then he understands the wish of the dream - to find his son, for them to be together and at peace again.
