PORTRAITS

The faces of people I have known. From the beginning. I loved sitting with them, drawing them. Painting them. An excuse, in a way, to spend some quiet time together, not speaking usually – just looking at them, studying who they were. A portrait can say so much. My own self- portraits, especially the most recent one titled “Here” says it all for me. To be present is the most important lesson of life. All good things come from that awareness and sitting with people you are interested in and people you love, to draw or paint, is one of the most moving aspects for me of being an artist.

I’ve tried to capture something unique and special about each person, something that shows not only who they are visually but, who they are inside.

Maybe most rewarding now for me is having done portraits of those who have left us - Roland, Ted, Francis, Inga, all great friends, leaving me with many memories of being close to them.
